How to Improve Your Slovak Outside Online Lessons (and Stay Sane)

Learning Slovak doesn’t have to be all about drilling exercises and memorization. Try incorporating it into your daily life – and you might even have fun along the way!

  1. A Slovak soundtrack for every day
Music, podcasts, audiobooks – let Slovak become your subtle roommate. Try Slovenčina na slovíčko or Slovak news in an easier-to-understand format.
  2. Movies and series – popcorn allowed
With subtitles or without, as long as you’re listening to authentic language. Even kids’ cartoons are a great choice – if you understand them, congratulations!
  3. Read – even yogurt labels count
Start with simple texts, work your way up to books, and who knows, maybe one day you’ll tackle tax laws.
  4. Write – even a grocery list will do
A diary, notes, social media posts – any text in Slovak is a win. And if you write maslo instead of máslo, you’re on the right track!
  5. Speak – even if it’s just to the mirror
If you don’t have anyone to talk to, talk to yourself. Or find a language buddy and turn awkward silence into awkward grammar – it’ll get better over time!
  6. Apps as your secret weapon
Anything that helps you keep words in your head longer than yesterday.
  7. Slovak phrases – your hidden superpower
Write down common expressions and try using them in real life. For example, Dám si bryndzové halušky (“I’ll have bryndzové halušky”) always works. Check out our blogs focused on vocabulary!
  8. Join the community – like and comment
Follow Slovak discussions, reply in comments, read memes. Yes, you can learn this way too!

And most importantly – enjoy yourself! Every little language mistake is just another step toward fluency. Mistakes are allowed, and learning doesn’t have to be perfect – just fun!
