UN camp visit

Did you know that Slovakia plays an important role within the UN peacekeeping forces protecting the divided island of Cyprus?

In cooperation with the Embassy of Slovakia in Cyprus, we organised a Christmas event that brought together the Slovak community living in Cyprus with the community of Slovak peacekeeper forces serving here. This time we visited the base of the Slovak UN engineers – the TATRY camp in the buffer zone in Nicosia.

This was spectacular and extremely interesting day, for not only children and their parents, but also for the peacekeepers and engineers themselves. Slovak soldiers have completely devoted themselves to flamingoes’ children that day. Even the heavy rain could not spoil a fantastic mood and atmosphere. Children had an opportunity to see and try the heavy machinery (with the assistance of professionals of cause). They did learn many interesting facts about the mission and a role of Slovak engineers in the UN forces; learned how to camouflage in the field watched a demonstration of the operation of civilian equipment and tested their handcrafting skills while making wooden boards together. A performance prepared by our students brought the real Christmas atmosphere to the Tatry camp. Folk dances and Christmas songs performed by Flamingos warmed everyone´s souls and helped us and Slovak soldiers celebrate the Christmas traditions away from their home and family.
